SEO results: what we measure and how we report them

At Digital Mountain, SEO results are measured in enquiries and revenue, not ranking screenshots. This page explains what we track for businesses across Lancashire and the UK, how we report it, what you can realistically expect at each stage of a campaign, and where to see the results of our client work.

Defining Success

What counts as an SEO result?

A ranking on its own does not pay the bills. A business is better judged on four levels, from the earliest signals to the outcome that matters.

LevelWhat we trackWhy it matters
VisibilityImpressions, average position, ranking keywordsShows whether Google is showing your pages for the right searches
TrafficOrganic clicks and visitsShows whether visibility is turning into visitors
ActionCalls, form enquiries, ordersShows whether visitors are the right people
Business outcomeLeads won, revenue, return on spendThe result that justifies the investment

Rankings are a leading indicator. Enquiries and revenue are the result. We report both, so you can see how early signals turn into the outcome you care about.

Monthly SEO reporting dashboard and performance tracking
Clear Reporting

How we report every month

Every monthly report lists what was done, what changed, what it produced and what is planned next, in plain English. It covers:

  • Work completed: each task done that month, so you can see what the invoice paid for
  • Rankings moved: the searches that gained or lost ground, and why
  • Traffic and enquiries: visits, calls, forms and orders attributed to organic search where they can be measured
  • Technical changes: what was fixed and what effect it had
  • What is not working: if something is underperforming, you hear it from us first, with the plan to change it
  • Next month: the priorities, and the reasons for them

Every quarter we add a strategy review, so effort goes to whatever the data says is working.

Rankings are a leading indicator. Enquiries are the result.

Expected Timelines

What results to expect, and when

Every site and market is different, so these are realistic patterns, not promises.

  1. Months 1 to 3

    Foundations

Technical fixes, speed, indexing and structure. Many sites see crawl and indexing improvements first, with little change in enquiries yet.

  2. Months 3 to 6

    Early movement

Pages built against the keyword map start to rank, usually for lower-competition searches first. Enquiries begin to grow.

  3. Months 6 to 12

    Compounding

Authority builds, more pages rank, and the gains stack on one another. This is where well-run campaigns start to show clear returns.

  4. Beyond 12 months

    Defending and expanding

Protecting what has been won and moving into more competitive searches.

How long each stage takes depends on your competition, your starting point and how much needs fixing. Anyone promising page one in ninety days is guessing.

Performance Drivers

What affects how quickly SEO works

  • Competition. A local trade in a small town moves faster than a national retailer.
  • Starting point. A site with serious technical problems needs the foundations fixed first.
  • Age and authority. Established sites with good links usually move faster than new ones.
  • Content. Sites with pages that answer what customers search for gain faster than thin ones.
  • Links and reviews. Trust signals matter, especially for local searches.
  • Consistency. SEO compounds over months, so stopping and starting loses the gains.

Measurement Methodology

How we measure SEO results

We use Google Search Console for impressions, clicks and average position, Google Analytics for traffic and conversions, rank tracking for the searches that matter, and the client's own records for calls and enquiries. We also encourage clients to set up Bing Webmaster Tools, so visibility on other search engines is measured too.

Being honest about attribution

Not every enquiry can be traced to a search. Some visitors phone after reading a page, some return later by typing your name, and some arrive from a recommendation. We say where the data is solid and where it is an estimate, and we do not claim credit we cannot show.

Local SEO tracking and Google Business Profile analytics
Local Results

How we measure local SEO results

For businesses that serve a local area, the results that matter most sit in the map and local results. We track:

  • Visibility in the map and local results for the towns you serve
  • Calls, direction requests and website clicks from your Google Business Profile
  • The number and rating of your reviews
  • Form enquiries and calls from the website
  • Local keyword rankings, town by town

Together they show whether local visibility is turning into customers. See how this works in practice on our local SEO page.

Honest Guarantees

Why we do not promise rankings

Google decides where pages rank, not agencies, and its own guidance warns that nobody can guarantee a number one position. We guarantee what we control: the quality of the work, the honesty of the reporting, and a straight answer when you ask how it is going. If you would like to understand how search works in general, Google's explanation of how Search works is a good place to start.

Realistic SEO expectations and Google search guidelines

Industry Red Flags

SEO results claims to be wary of

When you compare agencies, treat these as red flags:

  • A guaranteed ranking or "page one in ninety days"
  • Reports that show only ranking screenshots and a traffic graph
  • Rankings for searches nobody makes, or for your own brand name
  • No explanation of what work was done
  • Results with no timeframe, no source and no starting position
  • Long contracts with no way out if results are poor
  • Hundreds of links bought for a fixed price

We would rather you can check our work than take our word for it.

Evaluating SEO agencies and asking critical questions
Agency Evaluation

Questions to ask any SEO agency about results

  1. 1. Can you show me a real report, not just a ranking screenshot?
  2. 2. How do you measure enquiries and revenue, not just traffic?
  3. 3. Who does the work, and who checks it?
  4. 4. What happens if the results are not there after six months?
  5. 5. Do I keep my accounts, content and links if I leave?
  6. 6. Why would I believe you if you guarantee page one?

We are happy to answer all six. See how we work on our managed SEO campaigns page.

Proactive Adaptation

What happens if results are slow?

Sometimes a campaign moves slower than planned. When that happens we diagnose why, tell you plainly, and change the plan if the data says it is needed. It might be a technical problem we missed, a competitor who has moved, or a page that needs more work. You hear it from us first, not from a report you have to interpret yourself. Our contracts have an initial six-month term and then roll month to month, because we would rather earn the renewal than lock you in.

Questions

SEO results FAQs

What results can I expect from SEO?

More visibility for the searches your customers make, more visits from those searches, and over time more enquiries. How much and how fast depends on your market and your starting point, so a free analysis gives a realistic view before you commit.

How long before I see results?

Technical improvements can show within weeks. Ranking and enquiry growth usually builds over several months, with the strongest gains after the first six.

How do you measure return on investment?

By tracking the enquiries and sales that come from organic search against what the campaign costs, using the data you can share with us. We agree what counts as a conversion at the start.

Can I see a sample report?

Yes. Ask for one when you request your free SEO analysis.

How do you measure local SEO results?

For local businesses we track map and search visibility, calls, direction requests and website clicks from the Google Business Profile, alongside form enquiries from the website. Together they show whether local visibility is turning into customers.

Can you guarantee SEO results?

No. Nobody honest can, because Google decides rankings. We guarantee the quality of the work, the honesty of the reporting and a straight answer when you ask how it is going.

What if my results are slow?

We diagnose why, tell you plainly, and change the plan if the data says it is needed. You hear it from us first, not from a report you have to interpret yourself.

Do you report on conversions as well as rankings?

Yes. Rankings are a leading indicator. We also report traffic, enquiries and, where you can share the data, sales, because those are the results that matter.
